El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de ilustrar mis primeros puzzles para chiquitines, de la mano de Goula.

It’s been a year since I got the chance to illustrate my first puzzles for little rascals, thanks to Goula.

¿Qué es Goula? Se trata de una de las marcas integrada en el conocidísimo grupo Diset. Está especializado en juguetes de madera y se caracteriza por el mimo y la colaboración de ilustradores reconocidos con influencia mediterránea. Es por eso que me siento más que hallagada de poder formar parte de su catálogo. Cada producto viene con la firma del ilustrador, algo muy poco habitual, y que otorga un valor añadido a cada juguete. Entre su lista de ilustradores figuran nombres como Susana Hoslet, Emma Martinez o Marta Cabrol. ¡Top top…! 🙂

What’s Goula? It is one of the brands inside the wellknown Spanish toy group Diset. It is specialised in wooden toys and its main feature is the collaboration with recognised mediterranean illustrators. That is why it is so flattering to me to be part of their catalogue. 

Every product has the illustrator signature on it, which is something unusual that gives an added value to the items. Some of the illustrators with artworks in Goula are, for instance, Susana Hoslet, Emma Martinez or Marta Cabrol. Top class! 🙂

El encargo consistía en ilustrar dos puzzles de madera para niños de más de 2 años en los que apareciera un camión de bomberos, y una sala de espera de una clínica veterinaria.

Ya contaban con dos dibujos de estas características pero querían darle un aire más moderno y actualizado. Y ahí, para mi sorpresa, ¡entraba yo!

The job consisted of two illustrations for a pair of wooden puzzles for kids aged 2+, with a fire truck and a veterinary waiting room.

They already had two artworks with these features but wanted to update them and give a more modern look to them. And, surprisingly for me, this is where I came into the project! 

Quise darle movimiento, dinamismo. Normalmente las obras hechas para ese rango de edad suelen ser muy estáticas, bidimensionales y algo rígidas. No es incorrecto, ya que la capacidad de lectura de los niños tan chiquitines es limitada, pero creo que se le puede dar un poco de movimiento sin que repercuta en la lectura. Quizás no es lo más ortodoxo, pero contó con la aprobación de la marca. ¡Hay que estimular a los peques con retos! 😉

I wanted to give some motion feeling, some dynamism to the drawing. Works made for this short age range are usually very static, bidimensional and quite harsh. It perfectly correct, as their visual reading abilities are pretty limited, but I trully think we can provide some motion without affecting to the reading. Maybe it’s not the most orthodox thing to do, but the brand supported my approach. We must stimulate kids minds with these challenges! 😉

Trabajé los bocetos dando a la imagen una lectura circular, que centrara la atención en el centro de la imagen pero que ésta nos llevara a todo lo que sucede alrededor.

I worked on the sketches, focusing interest on the center of the image but giving a circular reading from it to the surroundings.

En el caso de los bomberos, el centro es el camión, con su alarma y su urgencia, y alrededor la reacción del público, humano y animal, a éste.

Regarding the fire truck, it is the main thing, with its siren, and around it we see all kind of reactions, from humans and animals.

En la clínica veterinaria, vemos una pareja de perros oliéndose, y sus correas nos llevan a descubrir todo lo que pasa alrededor.

On the waiting room, we see a pair of dog sniffing, and their leashes guide us to discover what happens around in this place.

La dificultad, a parte de que tenían que aparecer muchos elementos sin que quedara recargado, era hacer que en cada una de las piezas apareciera algo característico que pudiera identificarse en el “chivato” circular, que ayuda a los niños en la base de madera. Había que hacer, de forma natural, que cada cuadradito tuviera una peculiaridad.

The main difficulty was, besides having many elements without overdecorating, to include in every piece of the puzzle one peculiar thing in order to identify it on the circular “indicator”, which helps kids on its wooden base. I had to do, in a natural way, that every single square piece had a peculiarity.

Estoy muy satisfecha con el trabajo hecho. Como siempre, un año después no puedo evitar pensar que hoy haría algunas cosas diferentes, y creo que mejor. Pero en general, creo que es un buen producto, divertido, adecuado y con más de un detalle personal.

I am very satisfied with the work. As always, one year later I can’t avoid thinking that maybe today I would do things differently, and better. But, in general, I believe it is a good product, it is funny, appropriate and very personal.
